Saturn Swallowed His Children
The story of Chiron’s origin varies in different mythologies. In one version, he is the son of the Titan Cronus (Saturn) and the nymph Philyra. When Cronus came after Philyra, she transformed into a mare to escape him, but Cronus became a stallion and caught her. From this union, Chiron was born, half-man and half-horse, which disgusted Cronus, who left him to die. However, the Sun god Apollo found him and took him under his wing.
Note that unlike some centaurs, Chiron’s front legs are human while the back are of horse.
Apollo, being the god of music, healing, and prophecy, taught Chiron these arts. Chiron became known for his wisdom and knowledge, surpassing even his tutor Apollo. He was known as the wisest of all centaurs and was revered as a great teacher and mentor to many Greek heroes including Achilles, Jason, and Hercules.
Greek mythology also details how Saturn (Cronus) was prophesied to be overthrown by one of his children, just as he had overthrown his own father, Uranus.
To prevent this from happening, every time his wife, Rhea, gave birth, Saturn would swallow the child whole, imprisoning them within his stomach. This horrifying act was his attempt to avoid his prophesied downfall.
However, when their youngest child Zeus was born, Rhea managed to trick Saturn by giving him a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes to swallow instead. Zeus was then hidden away and later fulfilled the prophecy by overthrowing Saturn and rescuing his siblings from their father’s stomach.

What Does It Mean For Me?
Chiron conjunct Saturn, often referred to as “the wounded healer meets the taskmaster,” can be a challenging aspect in an individual’s natal chart.
This combination may indicate a person who has experienced deep emotional wounds, often related to their father or authority figures. The pain and difficulties they have encountered are often lifelong lessons that push them towards healing and personal growth.
Saturn represents discipline, responsibility, and structure, while Chiron represents our deepest wounds and the healing journey. When these two come together, it can mean that the person has a serious wound related to their sense of responsibility, discipline, or authority. Often, this comes from a strict, distant, or absent father figure (hence the term “bad dad”).
On the positive side, this aspect can drive a person to work hard to overcome their past traumas and become a source of wisdom and healing for others. It can also lead to a strong sense of empathy and understanding for those who have experienced similar struggles.
However, it’s important to remember that astrology is not deterministic. While these planetary aspects may provide some insights, they don’t define who a person is or will become. Everyone has free will and the capacity to grow and change, regardless of their natal chart.
Astrology is a tool for self-understanding and growth. It is not a definitive blueprint of our lives, but rather a guide to help us navigate our journey.
